About Waddesdon
Beginning in 1874 and continuing until 1885, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild constructed Waddesdon Manor with the purpose of showcasing his collection of art and providing entertainment for the fashionable world. Waddesdon Manor was first opened to the public in 1959, and it is currently administered by the Rothschild Foundation, which is a family charitable trust. This management is done on behalf of the National Trust, who obtained possession of the property in 1957. A collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts that belong to the Rothschild family can be found there.

Renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos (b.1971) was commissioned by the Rothschild Foundation to create Wedding Cake, a ceramic sculptural pavilion shaped like a three-tiered cake, which stands at a height of 12 meters. A whimsical continuation of the history of placing fancy structures in gardens and landscapes, it is set in a grove of trees beside the 19th-century ornamental Dairy. Other examples of such buildings at Waddesdon are the Dairy and the gilded Rococo-style Aviary at the Manor.

More than 300 artefacts crafted from rare and valuable materials are kept in a Rothschild Treasury. This gallery pays homage to the many generations of Rothschild collecting, featuring artefacts such as a cameo of Augustus Caesar’s grandson from the first century, jewellery given by Queen Victoria, items with Nazi inventory numbers, gold boxes, and more.

Flights of Fancy: Birds at Waddesdon
This summer, flock to Waddesdon for a bird festival. Find a variety of family-friendly events, exhibitions, and activities centred around birds around the Manor, Aviary, and Gardens.
The life and work of the painter Louis-Denis Armand (1723–1796), who worked at the renowned Sèvres porcelain factory, are showcased in the exhibition. Armand’s work was recently rediscovery. His birds evolved from whimsical “flights of fancy” inspired by his vivid imagination into works that were remarkably accurate depictions of birds of prey. He is generally considered the most accomplished bird painter at Sèvres. Additionally, he meticulously sketched real-life exotic birds, carefully selecting details to blend and amplify.
